This is a significant new leadership role on the executive team at the Financial Markets Authority (FMA). Leading a new team, the Director will head up a function housing the FMA’s Investment Management subject-matter experts responsible for designing, delivering and communicating the FMA’s approach to the Investment Management Sector.
The FMA plays a critical role in regulating capital markets and financial services in New Zealand alongside the Reserve Bank and the Commerce Commission. Its statutory objective is to promote and facilitate the development of fair, efficient and transparent markets.
This position has been created to reflect the FMA’s role in working closely with KiwiSaver and MIS providers and relevant industry associations to ensure the FMA has strong influence over and a good understanding of key issues for the industry. The Director will engage directly with senior management within the industry and with peers at other regulatory bodies. The role will also involve speaking to the media on behalf of the FMA on KiwiSaver/MIS issues.
In this broad and influential role you will have input into all key projects and initiatives including the development and implementation of the FMA’s regulatory strategy. You will work closely with other senior colleagues, especially those responsible for strategy, stakeholder relations, external communications & investor capability and frontline supervision. You will also have regular dialogue with the FMA Board and divisions of the Board.
You will have executive-level experience in investment management and at least some experience of retail financial services regulation either in New Zealand or in a comparable jurisdiction. You will have managed high-performing teams, and be comfortable with presenting to, and being in discussions with, Ministers, senior government officials and Boards and senior management of regulated entities.

This role reports directly to the Chief Executive. We are open for it to be in either Wellington or Auckland although the preference is for the position to be based in Auckland (due to the greater presence of the relevant sectors there).
